OPENING THE GATE
Opening the gate to creativity changes a person's life--the way she sees the world, the way
she relates to other people, the way she listens to her inner voices.
Reading stories, watching movies, and visiting museums feed the creative process, as do
walks through the woods, strolls along the beach, and meditations on silence. However, allowing
oneself to sink down into those sub-physical caves, where subconscious gemstones wait for us to
discover them, produces even more magical creativity effects.
Though I have dabbled in art and music, my most rewarding entrance into my own special
cave has been through creative writing. The path has been challenging and at times almost
debilitating. But the more I push myself through the gate and into the sometimes very dark and
narrow passages, the more rewarding the results become. Whereas I once found every excuse
not to sit down at my desk to write and often felt sick to my stomach when I finally did, I now feel
extraordinarily empty when I don't write. Writing has given me new worlds to explore. When I
enter them, I feel most at home. They mimic dreamscapes, except that when in them, I am fully
